The world of Indian dance is extensive and built on centuries of dance traditions. Indian dance is considered religious by some groups, a way of communicating with a 'higher power'. Some of the styles in Indian dance arise from temple dancing. Indian dance is a world of traditions, customs, and styles. A world that takes years to become competent in.

But, Indian Dance is known and adapted all over the world and can be found more and more in forms of fusion (belly)dance. The film dance style Bollywood is especially popular as a fusion style, but the characteristic hand and foot movements from other Indian styles are also reflected in fusion choreographies.

In this workshop, you dive together with Poernima Gobardhan into the world of hands and expression. Poernima is one of the leading figures of Indian dance in the Netherlands. In 2005 she started (at age 15!) Dance school Pretima Ke Dewashrie where Bollywood, in combination with the South Indian temple dance (Bharata Natyam), forms the basis of her classes.

Knowledge of or experience in Indian dance is not necessary for this workshop, but some general dance experience is recommended.

This workshop takes place LIVE at TR Witte de With on the floor of the big theatre (with enough space to keep 1,5 meter distance). If you prefer to stay at home, you can buy a livestream ticket and tune in via Zoom. The total amount of places will be strictly limited, to allow productive feedback.
