Hello Shimmy Shakers, new and old friends, and all interested persons,
Hello! Happy days – here, at long last, is a message from Shimmy Shake! Since our last message a rest and recuperation period was needed for our already retired Gail Pilgrim. However, it seems a lot of you are missing us, and we miss you too! So, we will start up again. Fresh, in a new form AND with a new board.
Dear Shimmy Shake fans! Here is a long-awaited update on our activities. Sad to say, over a period of one and a half years andafter putting very much energy into getting our very special project I AM WOMAN off the ground, we have had to give up. Such a pity! Such a missed opportunity for theaters, the cultural world, and the general public!
We are happy to announce that Shimmy Shake is preparing something brand new. As you may know, Gail, the producer of Shimmy Shake has taken a step backwards from ‘active service’ and the festival will not take place anymore. Fortunately Gail has trouble sitting still and thus has started working on a new project...
After a break, Shimmy Shake is reinventing itself. As you know, the festival is not taking place again. But Shimmy Shake is still alive! Gail has decided it's time for something new. We will not tell you just yet but something new is cooking and we're taking things in a slightly different direction. Still tribal fusion of course.
Hereby we are letting you know that the Shimmy Shake Organisation as it has been until now: Talent Search, Talent Carnival, Hafla, Flash Mob, Dancers Dealings, Next Level and our Festival, will officially stop at the end of this year. The Golden Girls project will continue – we have gifted it to Renate Bakker, along with all the costumes and props. Currently discussions are taking place about the possibility to pass along some elements of Shimmy Shake to others.
In recent weeks it looked as if we could organize a corona-proof Shimmy Shake Festival - despite all the measures. It was therefore a huge disappointment to hear that all theaters have to close their doors for two weeks.
SHIMMY SHAKE FESTIVAL 2020 WILL GO DUTCH!
Now that the Shimmy Shake Talent Search has gone digital, you have to make a video of your choreography. For some of you, this may be a piece of cake, something you have done times and times before. But for others, this may be new (and maybe a bit frightening).
Last night, the Dutch Government presented new measures to slow down the coronavirus outbreak in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, these new measures make it impossible for us to organise our Talent Search as we are used to. But we will not let us be slowed down by a stupid (BUT VERY SERIOUS!!) virus. That’s why the Talent Search goes digital!
At the moment, many parts of the world live in an almost unreal reality. Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, we stay at home as much as possible. Her in the Netherlands, all sports and dance classes had to stop and it is prohibited to have more than 3 guests over at your home. Therefore, it has become impossible for dance teachers to teach their classes.
Unfortunately, we were forced to cancel our Talent Search in Rotterdam on March 15. Although meetings of up to 100 people were allowed at the time, we did not consider it responsible to continue this afternoon.

It may still be windy and grey outside, but we are already busy with our summer festival! The Talent Carnival is a one-day festival where the coached talents from our Talent Search will perform. This year's Talent Carnival will take place on Sunday, June 7th in Theater ‘t Kapelletje in Rotterdam (Van der Sluysstraat 176, 3033 SR).
Voor de grootste en meest gevarieerde talentenjacht van Nederland is de zoektocht gestart naar het meest verrassende talent van het land. Deze te gekke show is voor zang, dans en variété, voor jong én oud. Iedereen is welkom bij het RTL4-programma: ‘Holland’s Got Talent’!
Jaw drop! February 23rd, we went to Zutphen for the first Talent Search of the year. So many talented dancers applied to join us, so we had an afternoon filled with performances! The panel was amazed by all the Talent Zutphen had to offer.
Last Sunday marked the first edition of Dancers Dealings! Our new business program made especially for dancers. A group of lovely ladies braved storm Ciara and had a day packed with workshops. The program was a little bit different than previously announced, but the experts really shared all the knowledge needed for a successful business!
When dancing is your passion, you might want to take it a step further and turn your passion into a career. For a lot of dancers, especially those who are self-taught, this can be a troublesome and scary process. To help them in their first steps in business, but also to help them who are around longer but struggling from time to time Shimmy Shake introduces Dancers Dealings.
Just a few more days, and we will beat the blue(s) together at the Shimmy Shake x Greenstone Belly Dance Hafla! At lot of dancers signed up to perform, so we can expect an amazing program in the afternoon of Saturday January 18th. Let’s dive in some of the things you can expect.
Every year Shimmy Shake organizes a nation-wide Talent Search to discover new Fusion Bellydance talent, to help dancers improve their level and to see where the local dancers and teachers stand with their skills. The Talent Search is also a day to simply join in and dance even if you don’t want coaching or feedback, it is all up to you.
